about

This song was written in March 2016 although some parts of it (namely the E to Am chord progression) was part of the 30 minute Drakus Suite at one point. But when this song was written proper, I had recently been transferred to North Carolina by my consulting agency and was living alone far away from my family for the first time in my life. 2016 was a turbulent year for everyone it seems. You had that crazy election, of course, but you also had a lot of great musicians, in particular ones that influenced me, pass away. David Bowie, Tom Petty, Paul Kanter, Greg Lake ... I could go on.

But this song was written shortly after I learned of Keith Emerson's tragic death. ELP had always been a significant influence on me growing up and I started to think of all the great musicians from that era. Who will replace the celebrated Joker archetype? The thief?

Us thieves always lived in the shadow of the Joker. We are much older now than they were when they had their first moments to shine. It may be too late for us, but perhaps that's how it always is for the thief archetype. This song mirrors the End of a Crisis. Both are the short, most radio friendly songs on the album. But whereas "End of a Crisis" depicts the falling tension after the old crisis ended, this song marks rising tension as the new crisis ramps up. It's time for the thief to "make everyone laugh with his dance" so that the next generation of Jokers can be celebrated.

This is the only song on the album where I perform every instrument and vocal. I usually perform the drums myself electronically before replacing the track with real drums, but this time I was really happy with the electronic drum track so I kept it.

lyrics

Oh the world is ending
the world that i’ve always known
I know a revolution’s coming
and I am all alone alone
I’ve lost my home

Oh the bottom’s dropping
all that I’ve known is gone
is anyone there to catch me
can i still survive the fall the fall
i’ve held on too long

were we born too early
were we born too late
or is this our first moment
to prove we can be great

were we born too early
were we born too late
or is this our first moment
to prove we can be great
